A Recipe For…Sophie’s Shakshuka

In the third episode of A Recipe For…, we meet Sophie, CEO of FoodCycle - a UK charity that transforms surplus food into free, nutritious meals served in warm, welcoming community spaces.

Sophie shares her much-loved recipe for Shakshuka - a dish she first learned from Arik, an Algerian chef at the restaurant where she worked as a pot washer. It’s a recipe that’s stayed with her through life and has now become a comforting cupboard dinner she cooks for her children.

Joined by host Si King, Sophie reflects on the power of community dining and the impact it can have on those facing food insecurity. Together, they explore how FoodCycle’s work - supported by Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief - is helping to create safe, joyful spaces where people can connect over food. Thanks to this funding, most recently FoodCycle has launched a school programme that offers children and their families a two-course meal made entirely from surplus food. It’s a vital initiative that provides not just nourishment, but a sense of dignity, togetherness and support for both parents and children.

A Recipe For... is part of Sainsbury’s partnership with Comic Relief, which aims to tackle food poverty and ensure everyone has access to the joy, memories and connection that food brings. Since 2022, Sainsbury’s partnership with Comic Relief has delivered over 59 million meals and over £23 million of funding to families who need it most. The food-focused programme is built on our shared vision of a future where everyone has access to the joy of good food, every mealtime, empowering people to become more food secure.

Our next episode of A Recipe For… is steeped in nostalgia, featuring cherished food memories from Comic Relief Co-Founder Lenny Henry. Lenny shares A Recipe For… Lenny’s Saturday Soup - a dish close to his heart - available to watch on YouTube from 2nd December.
