Making good food joyful, accessible and affordable for everyone, every day

Our purpose shapes why we exist and how we deliver for our customers, colleagues, suppliers and shareholders.

Our business model

It’s our ambition to be the UK’s first choice for food, attracting many more people to choose Sainsbury’s as the place they come to shop. We create value for stakeholders by building on the heritage and scale of our food business, enhancing our competitive advantage.

Taking Sainsbury’s to the Next Level

In February 2024, we set out our Next Level Sainsbury's plan. Our strategy continues to put food at the heart of our business and gives customers more of what they come to Sainsbury’s for: great value, leading quality food and outstanding service.

Our Plan for Better

Our Plan for Better is integrated into everything we do and critical to building long-term resilience in our business and across our supply chains. Outlining our priority focus areas, key targets and progress, it showcases our commitment to playing a leading role in creating a more resilient and sustainable UK food system.

Our people

We’re committed to being an inclusive employer where everyone is treated fairly and with respect and where colleagues feel proud to work, supported to grow, and inspired to be their best. With stores right at the centre of communities all over the UK, we’re proud to offer first jobs, fresh starts and long-term careers.

We’ve led the way on pay in our sector for many years and in 2024 we were named Grocer of the Year; a reflection of the care, commitment and talent our colleagues bring to work every day. We’re always on the look-out for brilliant people who want to join our team. Click the link below to find out more.

Our heritage

When John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury welcomed their first customer, their aim was to provide good quality food at affordable prices. That’s as true today as it was in 1869.

Purpose in action

Our purpose guides everything we do. How we drive real change and where we can have the greatest impact for our customers, colleagues, suppliers, farmers and communities, locally and nationally. At the heart of this is our commitment to ensuring good food is joyful, accessible and affordable for everyone, every day. Find out more about our purpose in action.
