Through our Next Level Sainsbury’s strategy, we are committed to delivering enhanced shareholder returns.
Dividends are payments made out of company profits to shareholders who invest in the company. Shareholders must hold shares on a particular date, the record date, to receive the dividend.
The amount per share of each dividend payment is decided by our Board of Directors. We normally pay an interim dividend each December and a final dividend for the previous financial year in July. The Board may declare a dividend at any time though, sometimes called a special dividend, to distinguish it from a regular one.
As announced in our Interim Results on 6 November 2025, we will return £250 million of proceeds from the disposal of our banking operations to shareholders via a special dividend of 11.0 pence per share. This will be paid on 19 December 2025 to shareholders on the Register of Members at the close of business on 14 November 2025. We are no longer proposing a share consolidation alongside payment of the special dividend.
For HY 2025/26, the Board has recommended an increased interim dividend of 4.1 pence per share (HY 2024/25: 3.9 pence). Consistent with prior years, this represents 30 per cent of the prior year’s full year dividend per share. This will be paid on 19 December 2025 to shareholders on the Register of Members at the close of business on 14 November 2025.
Please note that we moved to direct credit payments in December 2021 and no longer pay dividends by cheque. Shareholders can choose to have dividends paid directly into their bank or building society account or, alternatively, to participate in our Dividend Reinvestment Plan to receive dividends in the form of additional shares. Shareholders can update their bank details at https://uk.investorcentre.mpms.mufg.com.
We offer a dividend reinvestment programme (a 'DRIP'), which allows shareholders to reinvest their cash dividends in our shares. The shares are bought in the market on the dividend payment date through a specially arranged share dealing service provided by our share registrar. No new shares are allotted under this DRIP.
Full details of the DRIP and its charges, together with mandate forms, are available from our share registrar at https://www.mpms.mufg.com/en/for-individuals/uk/shareholders/dividend-reinvestment-plan-drip/.
You will still receive an annual dividend confirmation detailing each dividend to enable you to complete your tax return.
Investments made under the DRIP are in one company only and should therefore be considered as one part of a balanced portfolio. You should be aware that the price and value of any investments and the income, if any, from them, can fluctuate and may fall against your interest. You may get back less than you invest. Past performance is not a guide to future performance and if you are in any doubt about the suitability of this investment you should contact an independent authorised financial advisor.
We send out an Annual Dividend Confirmation (ADC) in relation to dividend payments. This means that those shareholders receiving their dividend direct into their bank account will receive confirmation at least once a year detailing the payments that have been made throughout that year.
If you are an overseas shareholder you can choose to have your dividend paid directly into your bank account in your local currency by using our registrar's International Payment Service. This service will mean that you receive your dividend quicker than by cheque and there is no chance that the payment will be lost in the postal system. Full details of the International Payment Service are available at https://www.mpms.mufg.com/en/for-individuals/uk/shareholders/international-payment-service/ where you can download the terms and conditions and appropriate form for completion. Alternatively, you can contact MUFG Corporate Markets on +44 (0) 371 664 0555.
