Dividends

Through our Next Level Sainsbury’s strategy, we are committed to delivering enhanced shareholder returns through a progressive dividend policy and have commenced a share buyback.

Dividends are payments made out of company profits to shareholders who invest in the company. Shareholders must hold shares on a particular date, the record date, to receive the dividend.

The amount per share of each dividend payment is decided by our Board of Directors. We normally pay an interim dividend each December and a final dividend for the previous financial year in July. The Board may declare a dividend at any time though, sometimes called a special dividend, to distinguish it from a regular one.

For the 2025/26 financial year, we expect to return bank disposal proceeds of £250 million via special dividend in the second half of the year, subject to regulatory approval. The special dividend will be accompanied by a proposed share consolidation.

Please note that we moved to direct credit payments in December 2021 and no longer pay dividends by cheque. Shareholders can choose to have dividends paid directly into their bank or building society account or, alternatively, to participate in our Dividend Reinvestment Plan to receive dividends in the form of additional shares. Shareholders can find further information on direct dividend payments at www.shareview.co.uk/info/directdividends.

You will still receive an annual dividend confirmation detailing each dividend to enable you to complete your tax return.

We offer a dividend reinvestment programme (a 'DRIP'), which allows shareholders to reinvest their cash dividends in the our shares. The shares are bought in the market on the dividend payment date through a specially arranged share dealing service provided by our share registrar. No new shares are allotted under this DRIP.

Full details of the DRIP and its charges, together with mandate forms, are available from our share registrar at help.shareview.co.uk.

Investments made under the DRIP are in one company only and should therefore be considered as one part of a balanced portfolio. You should be aware that the price and value of any investments and the income, if any, from them, can fluctuate and may fall against your interest. You may get back less than you invest. Past performance is not a guide to future performance and if you are in any doubt about the suitability of this investment you should contact an independent authorised financial advisor.

We send out an Annual Dividend Confirmation (ADC) in relation to dividend payments. This means that those shareholders receiving their dividend direct into their bank account will receive confirmation at least once a year detailing the payments that have been made throughout that year.

If you are an overseas shareholder you can choose to have your dividend paid directly into your bank account in your local currency by using our registrar's Overseas Payment Service. This service will mean that you receive your dividend quicker than by cheque and there is no chance that the payment will be lost in the postal system. Full details of the Overseas Payment Service are available at help.shareview.co.uk where you can download the terms and conditions and appropriate form for completion. Alternatively you can contact Equiniti on +44 (0) 333 207 6557.
