A Recipe For…James’ Bangers and Mash

In our debut episode, broadcaster Si King meets father and support worker James, to enjoy James’ favourite meal - bangers and mash - and explore the powerful role food has played throughout his life.

The hearty, autumnal dish is steeped in memories for James – it’s something he loves to cook with his son and helps James to teach him the value of a balanced, nutritious meal. It’s also a British classic, and the perfect staple for busy families seeking warming, comforting meals as the seasons change.

Throughout the episode, James reflects on food’s deep significance in his life - from the bowl of spaghetti bolognese that would always mark the start of his family holidays as a child, to how he bonds with his young son as they cook bangers and mash together, to the harsh realities he faced when he experienced food poverty and sacrifices James had to make to ensure his son had food on the table.

James also opens about the life-changing support he received during this challenging time, thanks to mobile food clubs run by The Bread-and-Butter Thing, one of Sainsbury’s funded partners, supported through our partnership with Comic Relief. This support enabled James and his son to access good quality, nutritious food during a difficult time in their lives, providing them with moments to connect over new ingredients and tasty treats at a time when they felt this could be out of reach.

A Recipe For... is part of our Meals Make Memories campaign, which sits within our Nourish the Nation programme - delivered in partnership with Comic Relief - to help tackle food poverty across the UK. Since 2022, Sainsbury’s partnership with Comic Relief has delivered over 59 million meals and over £23 million of funding to families who need it most. The food-focused programme is built on our shared vision of a future where everyone has access to the joy of good food, every mealtime, empowering people to become more food secure.

Our next episode of A Recipe For…will feature a heartwarming story from Carol - a youth worker and leader at The Avenues, a project supported by Sainsbury’s, Comic Relief and Feeding Britian - who shares A Recipe For...Carol’s Courgetti and will be available on YouTube on the 4th November.
